Facts matter, and as the President continues his near-constant scapegoating of and lying about the U.S.’s immigrant population while a complacent GOP watches and shrugs, we think it’s important to focus on facts.
As this article reports, it is false to claim that undocumented immigrants overuse government benefits. In fact, undocumented immigrants help the social security trust fund remain stable, by contributing as much as $12 billion annually, although the vast majority will never qualify for benefits under current law. And federal law prohibits undocumented immigrants from participating in most of the safety net programs – the limited exceptions being emergency medical care and a couple of programs that provide basic food for kids – and so the cost to the federal government is exceedingly small. While states like California provide benefits to children such as a guaranteed education and some state-funded safety net programs, those decisions are made at a statewide, not federal level. The repeated claim that immigrants are a drain on the federal fisc, or take advantage of federal safety net programs, is false.
Tom McClintock repeats these lies, and is quick to join in the scapegoating. This is one of the many reasons we oppose Tom McClintock. California’s Fourth District, and this country, deserve better.
