Tom McClintock has been receiving a generous salary, health care and plenty of other benefits – funded by our taxes – for nearly twelve years. In exchange he was supposed to work for us. He was supposed to spend his time fighting for the things that matter. He was supposed to at least try to solve the enormous problems we face in this District, this country and our world. Instead, he’s squandered his time and our money, in so many ways.
Tom McClintock’s refusal to acknowledge the enormous damage climate change is causing to our world, and the desperate need to address this problem now, is among his worst sins. McClintock, like too many Republicans, has stubbornly refused to accept the science that tells us that humans are causing climate change, and that we will not like the world we’ll be forced to live in if we don’t turn things around soon. We’ve talked before about Tom’s failure on this issue, and the likely reason. He receives steady support from the oil and gas industries, as we showed last month. And in exchange for their money, these companies who have played an outsized role in the destruction of our world, have gotten a politician who votes consistently for their interests, and against ours. The League of Conservation Voters gives him a 4% lifetime score, and highlights his many votes rejecting any effort to fix the problems his donors have caused. Tom McClintock is a big part of the problem.
This MIT article explains what we’ve done to our world in the decade that Tom’s been spinning his lies and denying climate change. As it explains, “[t]he 2010s were another lost decade on climate change. The only measurement that matters is greenhouse-gas emissions – and they continued to rise.” We’ve now “almost certainly shatter[ed] the dream of halting rising temperatures at 1.5˚ C” and are likely to see a 2˚ C rise. When – not if – we do, we will “doom the world’s coral reefs and regularly expose nearly 40% of world’s population to staggering heat waves.” We’ve frittered away another decade, and if we’re ever going to save our world, we must take start now.
Tom McClintock won’t take the steps we need to fix this enormous problem. He’s perfectly happy to watch our world spiral into the climate crisis his donors have helped create. He’s part of the problem.
California’s 4th District deserves better. We deserve a representative who sees our challenges with clear eyes and takes meaningful action to fix them. We deserve a representative who truly cares about what happens in this District. We deserve a representative who will fight for us.
Join us, as we fight to send Tom McClintock back to his own District, and to finally stop him from selling us out, one vote at a time. To learn more about the alternative, visit https://brynneforcongress.com/.
Because we know, as Margaret Mead said, that “a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
