Tom’s Embrace of Death Panels

Tom McClintock, like most of the GOP, would end the Affordable Care Act if he could. He has no meaningful alternative – his Congressional website reflects years-old support for the failed American Health Care Act, without any acknowledgment of the many flaws in that legislation, and a reliance on a competitive market despite the significant problems with that model – yet he continues to support reversal of the ACA. Once again, Tom has failed his constituents on a critical issue.

The Trump Administration has attacked and undermined the ACA in every way it could, leading to higher rates of uninsured people in the U.S., and more costly insurance for everyone, as this article explains. For years, the President who has Tom McClintock’s unequivocal support has been fighting in court to end the ACA entirely. That lawsuit – filed in an extremely conservative federal court – gave rise to lower court decisions finding critical parts of the ACA unconstitutional. The Supreme Court agreed to hear the case, scheduling a November 10th oral argument to decide whether the ACA should be struck down entirely. We won’t know until Spring 2021 whether the ACA will survive and continue to provide critical coverage to the millions of people across this country who rely on it for health care coverage.

Former Health Care Executive Wendell Potter talked about life without the ACA recently in this Twitter thread. As he explained, “[i]f the Supreme Court guts protections for pre-existing conditions, folks with asthma, diabetes or COVID-19 will be kicked off plans. That’s because they’re expensive to cover & insurers care about one thing: profit.” He mentioned the Texas woman discussed in this CNN story, whose insurance rescinded her policy days before surgery for an “aggressive form of breast cancer” because of minor discrepancies on her application – like failing to disclose a recent dermatologist visit for acne. He talked about the “common industry practice found that some insurers paid employees BONUSES for finding policies to cancel so they wouldn’t have to pay for women’s surgery & chemotherapy,” explaining that “[a]n untold number of Americans died as a result” and “[t]his could be the norm again.”

These death panels in the halls of America’s insurance companies are exactly what Tom McClintock wants. He has consistently voted to repeal the ACA, and even voted “no” last year on an Act that would have provided protections for Americans with preexisting conditions.

California’s 4th District deserves better. We deserve a representative who sees our challenges with clear eyes and takes meaningful action to fix them. We deserve a representative who truly cares about what happens in this District. We deserve a representative who will fight for us.

Join us, as we fight to send Tom McClintock back to his own District, and to finally stop him from selling us out, one vote at a time. To learn more about the alternative, visit
