The World We Want

What do we want from those we choose to represent us in the federal government? Why do we select one person over another? What should we expect from the person we elect? Those are the questions we are asking right now.

For this author, for the members of Sierra Forward, the answers are simple, and they strengthen our resolve to finally elect a representative in California’s 4th District who will see our problems with clear eyes and work to overcome them.

Truth. Facts. Science. Reality. We want and need representatives who are committed to each because our government fails when we elect people who are as loosely connected to reality as our current representative in California’s 4th District, Tom McClintock.

Never in our lifetimes has the importance of truth and facts and science and reality been clearer than it is now. One political party in this country rejected each years ago, and began to embrace what the president’s spokesperson once called “alternative facts” — better known as lies. That party and their members like Tom McClintock decided that the coronavirus pandemic was inconvenient for their political goals, and so they ignored it. They embraced magical thinking and told us that it would just disappear one day. They told us that it was just like the flu and exaggerated the death toll from the flu – although even that false flu death toll is much, much lower than the COVID death toll in this country. They insisted that the shutdowns that were needed to contain COVID would cause more deaths than COVID itself, ignoring their own ability and responsibility to adopt aid packages that would help us control COVID while protecting those harmed as a result.

This report from a House of Representatives Subcommittee catalogs the many failures of this administration and its sycophants like Tom McClintock. It aptly explains that “[t]he virus is a global scourge, but it has been an American fiasco, killing more people in the United States than in any other country.” Among its many findings, the House Subcommittee concluded that “President Trump’s decision to mislead the public about the severity of the crisis, his failure to listen to scientists about how to keep Americans healthy, and his refusal to implement a coordinated national plan to stop the coronavirus have all contributed to devastating results.” The U.S. has 4% of the world’s population and nearly 20% of its deaths – it has done “remarkably badly” when compared to similar countries – because the President and everyone who serves him failed us. Tom McClintock is at the top of that list, following the lead of the President every step of the way. Hundreds of thousands of people will have died before we finally defeat this virus, because politicians like Tom McClintock reject truth and facts and science and reality. Our economy will take years to recover because politicians like Tom McClintock serve their own political interests – at the expense of the people they were elected to serve.

California’s 4th District deserves better. We deserve a representative who sees our challenges with clear eyes and takes meaningful action to fix them. We deserve a representative who truly cares about what happens in this District. We deserve a representative who will fight for us.

Join us, as we fight to send Tom McClintock back to his own District, and to finally stop him from selling us out, one vote at a time. To learn more about the alternative, visit
