The GOP in the House Choose Corporate Profits Over Kids, Again

Once again, GOP politicians in the House were asked to choose between corporate profits and kids, and once again they chose wrong.

For years, politicians have combined nutritional assistance and farm subsidies in a single bill, and for years, this has given us barely sufficient funding of food stamps, school lunches, and other programs that help make sure those living in poverty in the U.S. have some food for themselves and their families. The vast majority of these benefits go to children, the elderly and the working poor – people who either can’t work, or already are working in low wage jobs. But that’s not good enough for the GOP in the House. They want to make it even harder for people to get nutritional assistance, passing a bill that would impose strict work requirements in many areas, and create other changes that would deny food to many. At the same time, they would make it even easier for farm owners to receive subsidies, “letting billionaires claim extra money even as struggling households see cuts.” Again and again, the GOP puts the interests of the wealthy ahead of the interests of the rest of us. If we let them get away with it, people will suffer because of their choices.

Tom McClintock joined his Republican colleagues in voting for this inhumane bill. This is one of the many reasons we oppose Tom McClintock. California’s Fourth District, and this country, deserve better.
