The Big Lie

Tom McClintock likes to pretend that he cares about the Constitution, and the laws of this country. But like the rest of the GOP, he’s just playing his part in the “law and order” lie.

Trump is the most lawless President this country has seen in a very long time. He’s “Individual 1” in the felony that sent his longtime lawyer Michael Cohen to prison. He’d be in prison on that charge alone if he weren’t president. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. As the Mueller Report explained, Trump egregiously obstructed justice, as he conceded in an interview. Trump thumbs his nose at constitutional restraints on his power, like the mandate that he obtain Senate advice and consent for cabinet members, the prohibition on receiving money or gifts from foreign governments, and the forefather’s decision to give Congress control over the federal purse, to name just a few. This list of 12 impeachable offenses by Trump was published last year, so it doesn’t mention more recent events like the Trump Administration’s flagrant and defiant violation of the Hatch Act – even holding the RNC convention at the White House, in defiance of this clear law and longstanding norms – and the ongoing corruption and self-dealing of the Trump campaign and administration. And let’s not forget the eight Trump associates who have been charged with or convicted of a crime, including two of his campaign chairs. This is just some of Trump’s egregious misconduct over the last four years.

Trump’s lawlessness is extreme – and Tom McClintock’s steadfast support for him is the height of hypocrisy – but this is what we’ve come to expect from Republican politicians. Their presidents are far more lawless, on the whole, than Democrats. And so Republicans like Tom McClintock are forced to embrace the “law and order” lie, and pretend that they actually care about the law. McClintock’s complaining about a supposed abuse of power by the Obama administration in investigating whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia in connection with the 2016 election, while ignoring the recent report showing that all of the FISA search warrants had material support, as well as the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Report detailing the extensive – and successful – collaboration between the Trump campaign and Russian spies to throw the 2016 election to Trump. So far as we can tell, he’s never mentioned the fact that Paul Manafort gave Trump campaign polling data to a Russian spy, effectively telling Russia exactly where it should deploy its misinformation campaign against Americans. Like most Republicans, McClintock demands strict enforcement of the law against Democrats, and ignores the far more egregious crimes and misconduct by Republicans. Because like most Republicans, he cares about political power above all else.
