Screw-Up at Trump’s USDA Will Deprive Tens of Thousands of Access to Farmer’s Markets

Union Square Farmers Market

Government is hard but immensely important work, affecting the lives of people across the Nation in large ways and small. The Trump administration is giving us yet another example of the real harm a neglectful and incompetent administration can do.

For years, SNAP recipients have relied on a particular process to use their benefits to buy fresh food at farmer’s markets. Everyone agrees that SNAP can and should be used to buy healthy food, and in many places – including many “food deserts” across the Nation –farmer’s markets are the best and least expensive places to get fresh fruits and vegetables. But for reasons that aren’t clear, the USDA (led by Trump appointee Sonny Perdue) has canceled a key contract that facilitates SNAP recipient access to farmer’s markets, and given the contract to a brand new company, apparently created specifically for this purpose (Financial Transaction Management). FTM didn’t renew its predecessor’s contract with the company that has enabled use of SNAP benefits at farmer’s markets, although it has no substitute in place. FTN claims it’s working to find an alternative, but SNAP recipients and the farmers who rely on them for income will both suffer while the USDA works to fix this problem.

Tom McClintock has shown the same animosity toward, and neglect of, the most neediest among us. McClintock is selling us out, one vote at a time. This is one of the many reasons we oppose Tom McClintock. California’s Fourth District, and this country, deserve better.
