In a vibrant democracy, the vote is critical and precious, and our elected representatives have a solemn duty to protect that vote and ensure that elections continue to be free and fair. The GOP has abandoned that core duty in its escalating quest for power.
Over the last few years, we’ve realized just how fragile some of this country’s election systems are. In February, we learned that before the 2016 election, Russians targeted 21 states and that they actually penetrated voter registration rolls in several. A few weeks ago, we learned that hackers – some of them children – found several ways to hack into voting systems, demonstrating how easy it would be for a hostile foreign government to disrupt this country’s elections. Yet, days later Republicans blocked efforts by Democrats to fund grants to states for critical election security. And now, the White House has blocked a bill by a bipartisan group of Senators designed to secure our elections, in part by requiring paper ballots. This President benefited from Russian interference in our 2016 election, and he and the GOP seem to be using the powers we gave them to pave the way for further interference.
Tom McClintock pretends that he’s committed to the principles our Constitution, but he has not done anything to protect this fundamental part of our democracy. McClintock is selling us out, one vote at a time. This is one of the many reasons we oppose Tom McClintock. California’s Fourth District, and this country, deserve better.
