Kids Are Not Political Pawns

Students in normal school setting

Tom McClintock decided to wade into the debate over school openings, and revealed once again how toxic and dangerous his politics are. In three short tweets, he demonstrated that he stands with the Trump administration, which is using our children as political pawns in its resolve to hide its egregious neglect, and make our country look “normal” again in the months before the election.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published a nuanced guidance recommending a goal of in-person learning. That guidance discusses the problems with remote learning, and the harm to students from school shut-downs. As we know, those are real harms, that schools are grappling to address. The AAP’s guidance came with caveats and recommendations for children of different ages, designed to reduce the risk of COVID spread, and find the balance in an enormously challenging situation.

Tom McClintock decided to use this guidance as a cudgel to attack Democrats. Because that’s what he does. He ignored the steps that must be taken to open safely. He didn’t mention the extra staff, all the supplies, the expanded space that will be needed to reduce the risk of COVID-19 spread. He didn’t acknowledge the debates across the country between people of good principle, searching for the best and safest solution to this challenge. And we certainly haven’t seen him advocating for an increase in funding to schools, already spread far too thin, in order to do all that must be done before we can safely open schools. Instead, Tom McClintock was his divisive, dismissive self. He accused “these leftists” of ignoring science, even as he was doing exactly that. He offered no solutions, because he has none. He simply attacked – his own constituents – because that is what Tom McClintock does.

California’s 4th District deserves better. We deserve a representative who sees our challenges with clear eyes and takes meaningful action to fix them. We deserve a representative who truly cares about what happens in this District. We deserve a representative who will fight for us.
