Doubling Down on the Death Cult

US Constitution

Tom McClintock’s latest screed is exactly what we’ve come to expect from Tom McClintock. Invoking communist China, McClintock bemoans the restrictions enacted as a life-saving measure across the country. He insists it’s time to open up. He’s just doubling down on the death cult taking over the right.

We’ve all seen what happens when COVID-19 is allowed to run rampant through a society. It’s a fallacy to believe that we can isolate those at risk while letting others roam freely throughout our towns and cities, interacting with strangers without any safeguards at all. Your at-risk parent’s caretaker inevitably will interact with someone who has COVID-19 and because the disease is so transmissible, they will carry it to your parent. Or if it’s you taking care of an older family member, it will be you who catches it — perhaps completely unaware — and carries that disease to the person you love. The suggestion that we can protect those most at-risk in our society without widespread restrictions is a fallacy. McClintock undoubtedly knows that — he’s a smart man — but he doesn’t care. He wants people to go back to work.

Tom McClintock invokes the Constitution when it suits him, ignoring it when it doesn’t. And so it’s no surprise to see his baseless claim — all rhetoric, but no proof — that the stay-at-home orders are unconstitutional. As this article by renowned constitutional expert Erwin Chemerinsky explains, “[t]hese claims have no basis in law.” To the contrary, a long line of cases in this country demonstrates that “[t]here is no right to put the health of others in danger and to act in a way that risks the collapse of our health care system. The government can, if it chooses, impose criminal penalties on those who willfully disobey orders designed to limit the spread of the coronavirus.”

Tom McClintock cares more about money and power — and the president’s election prospects — than the lives of his constituents. California’s 4th District deserves better. We deserve a representative who sees our challenges with clear eyes and takes meaningful action to fix them. We deserve a representative who truly cares about what happens in this District. We deserve a representative who will fight for us.

Join us, as we fight to send Tom McClintock back to his own District, and to finally stop him from selling us out, one vote at a time.

Because we know, as Margaret Mead said, that “a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
