Tom McClintock claims to support seniors. He certainly needs their votes to win. But once again, McClintock is nowhere to be seen when his constituents need him to fight for them, on the issues that really matter. Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid really matter.
The Trump Administration wants to balance the budget on the backs of seniors. Treating the money we’ve all paid into these programs for decades as a gift from the government — instead of the repayment of our money, that the government has taken from us with a promise to return it when we need it the most — the Administration has decided that it should cut critical programs in an attempt to fix the skyrocketing budget deficit it’s created in Trump’s few years in office. As this article explains, the Administration proposes to cut Medicare spending by 7%, adopting changes that will make it harder for seniors to get the care they need. It also would take $75 billion from the Social Security Disability Insurance program, reducing the benefits disabled workers — the vast majority of them older workers — receive when an injury makes it hard or impossible to work. And it would slash Medicaid spending — the primary source of funding for seniors in nursing homes — by a shocking 16%. It targets other critical services, too, like Meals on Wheels and senior jobs programs, among many others.
We couldn’t find any public statements from Tom McClintock on this critical issue — indeed, this is another area that McClintock has largely ignored for years — but we can predict what his vote would be on this budget. He’s long advocated for legislation requiring a balanced budget, which would force the government to raid the Social Security Trust Fund to meet its obligations. In 2018, as part of the Budget Committee, McClintock voted for a budget that would have done enormous harm to seniors, cutting $537 billion from Medicare, increasing the eligibility age from 65 to 67, and making $4 billion in cuts to Social Security, among many other destructive changes. He voted in favor of enormous, wasteful tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy among us, and then tried to fill the gaping hole in the budget he helped to create by taking that money away from the seniors who earned it, many of whom desperately need it.
California’s 4th District deserves better. We deserve a representative who sees our challenges with clear eyes and takes meaningful action to fix them. We deserve a representative who truly cares about what happens in this District. We deserve a representative who will fight for us.
Join us, as we fight to send Tom McClintock back to his own District, and to finally stop him from selling us out, one vote at a time.
Because we know, as Margaret Mead said, that “a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
